Today, September 30th, marks the first anniversary of taking photos for the Croatia Captured project. On that day, I went to Istria with a plan to visit a few places and take photos. The first location was Rovinj, where I had been a week earlier for the Weekend Media Festival, which is when this huge idea was first born. During that weekend (September 30th – October 1st, 2023), I visited several places around Istria.
So, one year later – what’s the status of the project?
Over the past year, I have built an archive of 10,860 photos, visiting 37 cities, 23 old towns and fortresses, and covering 8 different topics.
*Blue pinpoints mark locations I visited in 2024, and red mark the ones I visited in 2023. And yes, Slavonia is next!*
About the travels
Most of my travels have typically been one-day road trips and weekend getaways, but I had two major week-long trips where I visited places I had never been before! The first one was in May 2024 when I ran the Wings For Life Run in Zadar. I took the opportunity to visit the Island of Pag, Nin, Zadar, and Novigrad Zadarski. After the race, I stayed in Zadar for one more day, and then went to Šibenik, where I stayed for a few more nights. While there, I visited four of its fortresses, explored the old town, took a day trip to Split, and also visited Klis Fortress.
The next trip was at the end of August, when I booked an apartment in Makarska and spent five days traveling. From Trogir and Omiš in the north, to Imotski in the east, and all the way down to Dubrovnik and Ston in the south. What a week it was!
I don’t have much spare time to travel, but whenever I get the chance, even for a day, I try to visit somewhere new. I hope to embark on my next adventure in the coming weeks. It will be a bit shorter, but I still can’t wait!
Some of the photos from that one-year project are available on my Shutterstock, while the list of all places and topics I’ve visited is available on the Showcase pages on Croatia Captured.
