Returning to Castle Severin na Kupi felt familiar, yet different this time. Although it wasn’t my first visit, it was the first under the Croatia Captured project, giving the experience a stronger purpose. On November 23rd, 2024, I revisited this historic site with the aim of documenting it more carefully, with a focus on capturing the atmosphere that defines places like this.
The photo shows a tower of the castle covered in ivy, framed by autumn foliage and partially hidden behind nature slowly reclaiming the structure. The textures of the weathered walls, combined with the greenery, tell a quiet story of endurance and time. The late afternoon light gave the scene a warm tone, adding contrast between the natural surroundings and the aging castle stone.
Photographing locations like this challenges me to find a balance between documenting the current state and respecting the historical weight the place carries. I always try to avoid overediting — letting the textures, colors, and condition of the place speak for themselves. In this photo, I focused on showing the mixture of nature and architecture without forcing the scene to look more “perfect” than it really is.
Castle Severin na Kupi, also known as the Zrinski-Frankopan castle, dates back to the 16th century and was an important defensive and administrative center. It belonged to two of Croatia’s most influential noble families, the Zrinski and the Frankopan, both of whom played a major role in the region’s history. Though damaged and partially abandoned today, the castle remains a symbol of a long and complex past.
