Since 2017, I have made it a tradition to visit Zadar every year to take part in the Wings for Life World Run. In 2024, I extended my stay by an extra day to slow down, explore the city, and dedicate more time to capturing its atmosphere before moving on to Šibenik for additional photography work across Dalmatia. That decision led to one of my favorite sunset sessions to date.
This photo was taken at the Monument to the Sun, also known as the Greeting to the Sun — a public art installation designed by architect Nikola Bašić. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the monument’s surface became a mirror, capturing silhouettes of people against the glowing sky. I positioned myself low to the ground to maximize the reflections and create a strong connection between the sky, the installation, and the crowd enjoying the moment.
Photographing Zadar’s sunsets can sometimes feel overwhelming because of their reputation, but I approached this scene with a simple mindset: document what makes this experience so universal. It’s not just about the colors in the sky, but about the interaction between people and the space. That’s what I wanted to capture — not a postcard-perfect sunset, but an honest moment.
The Monument to the Sun, completed in 2008, is a fascinating fusion of art, technology, and environmental consciousness. During the day, it absorbs sunlight through solar panels, and at night, it transforms into a colorful light show. It has become one of the most recognizable landmarks in Croatia, making it an essential stop for anyone visiting Zadar.
