This photo was taken on November 1st, 2024, somewhere in Slavonija, while I was driving toward Ilok. It wasn’t a planned stop—just one of those small villages you pass without knowing the name. What made me pull over was the dense fog that had settled over the road and the way it softened everything in front of me. It was the kind of atmosphere that asks for a photo, even if you’re just passing through.
The photo looks straight down a main street lined with single-story houses on both sides, their facades in muted colors. The fog hides everything beyond a few hundred meters, including what appears to be a church tower barely visible in the distance. There’s no movement, no people outside—just empty space and a recently paved road cutting through the stillness. Power lines, uneven sidewalks, and slightly overgrown edges all add to the raw, unfiltered look of the scene.
Most of my shots from the road are quick decisions. I don’t always stop unless something really makes me look twice. There was a kind of unintentional symmetry to the houses, the poles, the fog, and the road. I liked that there was no landmark here, no obvious subject—just a mood, a moment. It’s one of those photos that says more by not trying too hard.
Context: Rural Eastern Croatia
Slavonija is known for its flat landscapes, farmland, and small villages that haven’t changed much over the decades. Roads like this one connect places most people only pass through. On a foggy morning like this, everything slows down, and scenes like this—simple but full of detail—feel worth capturing. This photo is part of a broader visual record I’ve been building of less-traveled parts of Croatia.
