Photographing the Tower of St. Duje Cathedral in Split: A Closer Look at the City’s Icon

During my five-day road trip around Dalmatia, based in Šibenik, I spent a full day exploring Split with my camera — really taking the time to walk, observe, and shoot without rushing. Even though I had visited the city before, this was the first time I dedicated serious hours to capturing its details. It quickly became clear that Split is a place I’ll want to return to again.

This photo shows the famous bell tower of the St. Duje Cathedral, one of the most recognizable landmarks in Split. Framed between the stone columns and taken from a low angle, the shot highlights the structure’s detailed Romanesque architecture. The Croatian flag waving high above added a nice layer to the composition, connecting the past and present in a single frame.

When photographing places like this, I like to spend a little extra time just looking first — watching how the light changes the surfaces and how people move through the space. It’s tempting to go straight for the obvious angles, but slowing down usually leads to stronger, more personal images. Here, focusing on the tower from a tucked-away corner helped isolate its shape against the bright sky without distractions.

The St. Duje Cathedral (officially the Cathedral of Saint Domnius) is one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals still in use today. Originally built as the mausoleum of Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century, it was converted into a Christian cathedral in the 7th century. Its bell tower, constructed between the 12th and 16th centuries, is now one of the city’s defining symbols.
