Ilok is often overlooked on the usual Croatia travel route, but it’s a town with a lot to offer—especially if you enjoy a slower pace and historic surroundings. During my visit in November 2024, I stopped at the Church of St. John of Capistrano, which stood out immediately against the blue sky. With its tall spire, brick façade, and clean architectural lines, it was a perfect subject to photograph, especially framed by autumn trees and a touch of fortress wall in the background.
This church is more than just a landmark—it reflects the cultural and spiritual layers of Ilok. Named after St. John of Capistrano, a 15th-century Franciscan priest, it connects the town to broader European history while also tying into Ilok’s medieval and Baroque heritage. The Odescalchi family, once influential here, left their mark on the area, and this church remains part of that story. For anyone traveling through eastern Croatia, Ilok is well worth adding to your list—not only for its architecture but also for the atmosphere of a town where history is still very present.
