Drežnik Old Town sits on a cliff above the settlement of Drežnik Grad in the municipality of Rakovica, on the edge of the Korana River canyon in Karlovac County; it is mentioned as far back as 1185. Its owners changed over time, from the Nelipić, Gising, and Babonić families to the Frankopan Tržac branch of the Counts of Krk from 1321.
The sixteenth century brought a constant Ottoman threat, so the fortress fell into Turkish hands in 1592 and remained under their control until the late 18th century. It was liberated during the Austro-Turkish War of 1788–1791, after a two-day siege and artillery bombardment under General Daniel Peharnik-Hotković.
Its position on the left bank of the Korana made it part of a defensive chain – the cordon (hence the name Kordun) – together with Tržac, Furjan, Slunj, and Cetingrad, which illustrates the military geography of Lika and Kordun.
The floor plan is an irregular quadrangle with two square towers and one round tower on the northern side; the round tower is currently undergoing restoration, while the rest remains in ruins overgrown with vegetation.
Visitors combine a tour of the site with Plitvice Lakes National Park, near which the Korana begins its course.
