Slunj is a town in the southern part of Karlovac County in the Kordun region, with a municipal area of 393.4 km² and 4,224 inhabitants according to the 2021 census. Its urban core stretches along the Slunjčica and Korana rivers, while the main road leads toward Plitvice Lakes and the central Adriatic.
Administratively, the town encompasses sixty-six settlements, from Arapovac to Zečev Varoš, which makes it a dispersed unit of local self-government in a karst and forested area. Earlier censuses show an ethnic structure with a dominant Croatian population and a significant Serbian share in certain years.
The landscape segment highlights the waterfalls of the Slunjčica in Rastoke as a visual tourism brand, as well as the “old Frankopan fortress” as a historical defensive point built before the wars against the Turks. Napoleon’s warehouse is mentioned as a reference point for views of the surrounding area.
Demographic trends show a decline in population from the broader censuses toward contemporary figures, which is typical of war-affected and rural areas of Lika and Kordun.
For visitors, Slunj functions as a gateway to Plitvice Lakes National Park, offering a watery landscape, watermills, and a historic core set on the beds of two rivers.
