Lice Grada becomes a Croatian portal: after 10 years of Zagreb, stories from all over Croatia are arriving

Categories:

The Lice Grada story began back in the now-distant year of 2013, as an answer to one simple question I asked myself: where can I publish my photographs?

At the time, I didn’t want to publish under my own first and last name, but rather to create a completely new identity under which I could share photographs of Zagreb.

I was always happy with that name because I didn’t want to tie it to a single location, yet I still wanted it to clearly explain what it was about. That’s why there’s a visual part of the name – “lice” (face) – and the very subject of the photographs – “grada” (of the city). Even back in 2013, some people told me the name was great because it didn’t limit me to just Zagreb, but could one day represent all of Croatia, and even Europe. Back then I just laughed at that idea, but that day has come. I’m not conquering Europe – the borders of Croatia are quite enough for me.

So as not to go into too much detail and recount the entire history of the project, I’ll mention just one more year – 2016. That’s when Lice Grada got its website, licegrada.hr. I mention this year for two reasons: first, 2026 marks ten years of the licegrada.hr website’s existence, and second, that very website is no longer just a Zagreb portal, but a portal dedicated to Croatia.

I’m not moving into politics, sports, showbiz, and similar topics. The focus remains the same – history, architecture, interesting stories, and everything that has made up Lice Grada until now. Of course, given that I’ve been involved in photography for more than 15 years, the focus still remains on the “faces of cities” (lica gradova), while the texts are there as a nice addition that gives the photographs extra context (and as an SEO tool that brings you to these pages).

There will probably be disappointed readers who came here primarily for Zagreb, but not a single article will be removed. Likewise, I hope there will be more of those who will be delighted by this change, as they’ll get the chance to read stories about numerous Croatian cities and locations, and learn a thing or two that I myself learned while traveling around Croatia with a camera in my hands.

All photographs of Zagreb on the licegrada.hr website can be found in the archive at fotografijezagreba.hr, and all photographs from travels around Croatia can be found at fotografijehrvatske.hr.

Note: During June, an adjustment of the articles and categories on the homepage will be underway, so I ask for your understanding if there are some illogical category divisions.

Thank you all for ten years of companionship. We continue onward!

Ivan
