Samobor Old Town, set on Tepec hill above the town of Samobor, is one of the most famous medieval fortresses in Croatia. Its construction was begun by the Czech king Ottokar II Přemysl between 1260 and 1264, following the Battle of Kressenbrunn in Bohemia. At that time he held these lands, and the fortress served him as a stronghold against the Hungarian king Béla IV. Today, this historic structure is an unmissable destination for lovers of history, architecture, and nature.
Over the centuries, Samobor Old Town changed owners, of whom there were around fifteen in total. The key families that shaped the castle were the Babonić family, the Counts of Celje, the Ungnad family, the Erdődy family, and the last owners, the Kulmer family. Each of these families left its mark on the architecture, resulting in a layered blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The most visible remains of the “newer” part of the castle, such as windows and ornaments, belong precisely to the Baroque phase of noble habitation before its final abandonment.
Although the fortress is in a ruined state today, its remains offer insight into the rich history of the region. Visitors can explore the preserved sections of the walls, towers, and the remnants of interior rooms. From Tepec hill, there is a striking view of the town of Samobor and the surrounding landscape, making this location ideal for hiking and photography.
Of particular note here: Samobor Old Town is also connected to numerous legends and tales. One of the most famous is the one about hidden treasure supposedly left behind by its noble owners. These stories, together with its historical significance, attract many tourists and researchers. The local community regularly organizes events and festivities to bring the fortress’s history to life.
The castle was inhabited and in good condition until the end of the 18th century. The noble families abandoned it because it had become uncomfortable for modern life, and the decisive moment came at the beginning of the 19th century, when the owners of the time began removing the roofs and selling off the material, which accelerated its transformation into the ruin we see today. Today, Samobor Old Town is a protected cultural monument and a symbol of the town of Samobor. Its history, architecture, and natural setting make it one of the most important historical sites in Croatia. A visit to this place offers a special experience that joins past and present, history and nature.
