Baška is a settlement and municipality on the island of Krk in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County; the municipality covers an area of 98.9 km² and comprises four municipal settlements. Administratively, it is part of the coastal tourist network of Krk, with the postal code 51523 and an official municipal website.
Its rich cultural inventory includes parish and other churches (among them the monument of St. Lucy in Jurandvor), the Baška Tablet, a local heritage museum, and the traditional dry-stone “mrgari” in the shape of a flower. These elements make the difference between a purely beach-going experience and a visit with a historical and museum layer.
The Baška coastline boasts around thirty pebble beaches accessible on foot or by boat. The most prominent is the natural pebble “Vela Plaža” (Great Beach) in the southwest of the settlement, 1,800 meters long and capable of accommodating a large number of swimmers; it is particularly noted as being suitable for children and non-swimmers. Since 1999, the beach has flown the Blue Flag of the European Foundation for Environmental Education, symbolically emphasizing the cleanliness of the sea, safety, and the quality of the beach infrastructure.
Tourism in Baška has been formally tied to the sea since 1908, when the first bathing resort on the island of Krk was opened. Consequently, hospitality and accommodation facilities grew up alongside the beach – bars, restaurants, pizzerias, cafés, hotels, and private apartments – making the beach the functional center of the summer offerings.
In 2021, the municipality had 1,656 inhabitants; earlier statistical summaries also provide the distribution by settlement (Baška, Batomalj, Draga Bašćanska, Jurandvor). Baška remains an example of a karst landscape where the legacy of literacy and sacral architecture merges with a well-developed coastal tourist infrastructure.
