Rovinj has always been one of those places that stays in your mind long after you leave. Although this was my second time visiting, it was the first time I had my camera with me — and the first trip dedicated to my Croatia Captured project. Arriving without a strict plan, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a lively scene unfolding at the waterfront.
The photo captures a colorful moment from a vintage bicycle parade. Riders dressed in period costumes made their way through the busy Rovinj promenade, mixing with curious onlookers, tourists, and locals. The standout figure was a gentleman riding a penny-farthing bicycle, wearing a classic black suit and bowler hat. Against the backdrop of a sunny day, waterfront cafés, and docked boats, the scene perfectly balanced movement, tradition, and everyday life.
Having the opportunity to photograph spontaneous events like this is always a reminder of why I enjoy working without a rigid schedule (well, not always). When traveling, especially for projects like Croatia Captured, keeping things flexible often leads to capturing authentic, unscripted moments. This parade was a good example — an event I didn’t expect, but one that turned out to be the highlight of the day.
Rovinj is well-known for its charm, colorful old town, and vibrant street life. Events like this vintage bike parade showcase the town’s ability to blend its deep historical roots with a lively modern atmosphere. Whether it’s street performances, small parades, or simple everyday scenes, Rovinj always has something happening around the next corner.
