Photographing the Bell Tower of the Cathedral of St. Anastasia in Zadar

Every year since 2017, I visit Zadar to participate in the Wings for Life World Run. In 2024, I planned some extra time — staying one more day in Zadar and then continuing to Šibenik for several more days of photography across Dalmatia. Slowing down a little allowed me to focus on places I usually just pass by.

One of the photos I captured during this visit shows the bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Anastasia, standing tall against a clear blue sky. With the scattered clouds and strong light, it was the perfect moment to highlight the tower’s sharp lines and the historic feel of the stonework. I framed the shot to let the tower dominate the scene, surrounded by the intense blue of the sky.

Even though I’ve been to Zadar many times, photographing it with fresh eyes always brings something new. It’s a reminder that you don’t always need a brand-new place to find a different perspective — sometimes, it’s about being more patient and observant.

The Cathedral of St. Anastasia is the largest cathedral in Dalmatia and one of Zadar’s most important landmarks. Its bell tower, recognizable by its clean Romanesque lines and sharp spire, is a defining part of the city’s skyline. Originally started in the 12th century, the cathedral has been expanded and renovated over centuries, keeping its strong historic character.
